Evening dress designed and worn by Gabrielle Chanel. Black silk lace with black rayon crepe liner and white linen. The corsage of this dress is a cascade of violets, gardenias, and chrysanthemums, rendered in raw cut linen. To create an off-the-shoulder neckline with a plunging back, Chanel introduced a boned bodice. (c.1938)
